The government is moving forward with the creation of a platform to certify meat destined for Europe

He National Meat Institute (INAC), in conjunction with other agencies of the State, is advancing in the development of the platform to certify deforestation-free meats, a requirement that will be mandatory starting next year for producers who wish to export to the European Union (EU).

The Board of INAC has taken the position of working to solve this issue and arrive with the corresponding certifications so that no Uruguayan producer is unable to export to the European market, which is the one that best prices meats globally,” said the vice president of INAC, Guido Machadoto Rural Radio.

Its development advances

The platform is being developed by INAC, the Ministry of Environment (MA), the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) and Agricultural Planwhich aims to build “a system of environmental added value to agricultural production.” Meanwhile, they announced that they will soon hold a tender to determine who will develop the platform’s software.

Machado said that the platform will allow for the traceability of the national herd, as well as the photographic and satellite survey of deforestation, whether of commercial forest plantations or native forests.

Barriers of Europe

Starting January 1st of next year, several products that are exported to the old continent will have to have a certification that ensures that they were produced without deforestation. Products include palm oil, beef, soybeans, coffee, cocoa, wood, charcoal and rubber, as well as products derived from these.

According to Machado, this measure corresponds to a tariff barrier which seeks to impose the European Union for the rest of the world and that the efforts made by the government of Uruguay to declare their exports deforestation-free “have not prospered.”

Test load

At the end of June, companies FMS, LQSA and Mosaica SA-Golden Sun They managed to export the first shipment of deforestation-free meat to the European Union.

The first shipment with a certification of deforestation-free meat was exported to the European Union by air, bound for Italy and Swiss, mostly.

The particularity of this shipment is that it is ahead of the upcoming EU requirements where exports to the old continent must have this certification before January 2025.

That’s why, since FMS, LQSA and Mosaica SA-Golden Sun They felt the responsibility of responding to their European clients who are increasingly demanding this type of certification in response to the imminent requirement of the bloc’s legislation.
