Travelers who are about to go on holiday are often unsure. Should they really go on holiday? Is it even possible to cancel without any problems? “If the implementation of a package holiday or transport to the holiday destination is significantly impaired or even impossible due to unavoidable and exceptional circumstances, a cancellation is possible free of charge. This can be the case in the event of natural disasters such as fires – regardless of whether there is a travel warning from the Foreign Ministry,” says ÖAMTC lawyer Martin Hoffer.

However, a free cancellation is only possible if the start of the holiday and the dangerous situation are very close together in time and the planned trip leads exactly to the affected situation. A forest fire on the Greek mainland, for example, will not justify the free cancellation of a holiday trip on an island. “If the holiday doesn’t start for two weeks, for example, you have to wait and find out about the current situation at short notice,” says Hoffer. Anyone who is about to start their package holiday should contact the travel company and look for alternatives together.
