Vice World Champion Simon Bucher misses the final in tenth place

For the final, Bucher would have had to be 27 hundredths faster.

Ultimately, it was 27 hundredths too many for the hoped-for Olympic final over 100 meters butterfly. Tyrolean Simon Bucher, who swims for ASV Linz and is the current vice world champion over this distance, came in “only” tenth in a time of 51.35 seconds.

“I can’t complain about that. Of course I’m a little disappointed, I put a lot of pressure on myself,” said the 24-year-old. But he will be allowed to go to the finals this evening as the second reserve. Before that (12.40 p.m.), Bucher will be competing in the 4 x 100 m individual medley heats with Bernhard Reitshammer, Valentin Bayer and Heiko Gigler.

On Friday morning, Lena Kreundl left the pool of the Arena La Defense, which was sold out with 17,000 visitors, in 24th place in the 200-meter individual medley preliminary competitions (2:15.04 minutes). “For me, a circle has come full circle,” said the 26-year-old with tears in her eyes. Even with a personal best, the 3.08-second place in the semifinals would have been out of reach for the Steyr native. But Kreundl had hoped for a better time.
