He Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRREE), Nicolas Albertoniassured that diplomatic relations with Venezuela are in a “gray” situation, after the Bolivarian government of Nicolas Maduroaccused of committing fraud in the last presidential elections, decided to withdraw all its diplomatic personnel in the Uruguay and ordered the immediate departure of the Uruguayan representatives in Caracas.
This Monday at a press conference, Albertoni confirmed that despite Maduro’s orders, the Embassy of Uruguay in Caracas continues virtually “active”, since, despite the fact that the ambassador Silvana Montes de Oca returned to Uruguayan administrative officer and local officials continue to work in the building, which did not close its doors.
Regarding this, the Vice-Chancellor stressed: “The embassy did not close its doors; strictly speaking, today the Uruguayan embassy is still active in some way in Caracas.”
“The government of (Nicholas) Ripe made the unilateral decision to expel Uruguayan diplomats in Caracas as well as Venezuelans in Uruguayand that creates uncertainty,” Albertoni lamented.
“We don’t have diplomats in both capitals”
“It is not strictly a break in relations, which would be a more objective element,” said Albertoni, adding: “Today we are faced with a grey area, we do not have diplomats in both capitals and at the end of the day the main affected parties are the communities that live in those countries. The consular channels and everything that links you to the country are disabled today.”
“We are in a grey area because we do not have a diplomatic representation and a head of mission,” said the diplomat, who confirmed that there are talks “at all levels” with the Venezuelan opposition. “The president (Luis Lacalle Pou) and the chancellor (Omar Paganini) communicated with (Maria) Corina Machado“But the tone of the dialogue was not to request asylum,” he said.
