Police car set on fire in Linz: charges against several young people

The “Volksblatt” reported in its Saturday edition. The 20-year-old ringleader, who was arrested shortly before Christmas, is accused of serious communal violence, inciting serious damage to property and attempting to intentionally cause serious bodily harm.

The three first investigated suspects, aged 16 and 20, were also charged. They are also accused of serious community violence. The 16-year-old, who confessed to having set fire to the police car, also has to answer for serious damage to property. According to the “Volksblatt”, three young people between the ages of 14 and 16 who had beaten up two of the accused after making a confession had to go to the judge on January 21 for serious bodily harm and attempted coercion.

Background: On November 14th, a police car in the Ebelsberg district of Linz went up in flames while the officers checked compliance with the corona rules. Two 16-year-olds and one 20-year-old were investigated as immediate perpetrators. It was clear to the investigators from the start that the three were part of a larger group. In the weeks before, this had repeatedly detonated firecrackers in the south of Linz and struck a racket, thus provoking police operations. These actions were boasted on social media, and the attack on the police car was filmed and posted on the Internet. The videos made it easier for the police to investigate the perpetrators.
