Debate in Italy on penalties for those who refuse to be vaccinated

Some politicians and virologists criticize the low level of penalties for those who refuse to be vaccinated, while five-star founder Beppe Grillo describes the compulsory vaccination as a measure that resembles an “Orwell regime”. “A one-time 100 euro fine for those who refuse to be vaccinated is equivalent to parking tickets for parking illegally,” criticized the immunologist Roberto Burioni on Twitter.

“Let’s be honest: A one-off fine of 100 euros for people over 50 who do not comply with the vaccination requirement is not a serious measure. Circumventing an obligation that is fundamental to our health is serious,” commented Raffaella Paita, MP of the co-ruling party Italia Viva on twitter.

Beppe Grillo, founder of the Five Star Movement, the strongest individual party in the Italian parliament, sees it differently. “Submission to a central state control and even more so to compulsory medical treatment such as compulsory vaccination evoke Orwellian images that weigh psychologically heavy.”

According to current information from the Italian Ministry of Health, 2.1 million Italians aged 50 and over have not yet been vaccinated and are subject to the compulsory vaccination, which the Draghi government decided on Wednesday. The compulsory vaccination applies on Saturday to all people over 50 years of age living in Italy, both Italians and foreigners, with the exception of those who are exempted for health reasons.

For people who have recovered from the coronavirus, the obligation comes into force within a maximum of 6 months from the time of recovery. The obligation is valid until June 15th and for those who will be 50 years old by that date.

Meanwhile, the school principals fear a sharp increase in infections in schools after the restart of the school year next Monday. Due to the high number of infected teachers and vaccination opponents, who were suspended after the introduction of mandatory vaccination for teaching staff on December 15, there could be staff shortages. Therefore, many school principals called for the new start of the school year to be postponed.
