The senator and presidential candidate of Cabildo Abierto (AC), Guido Manini Rioswas surprised after the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pouvetoed the controversial article 72 of the media law, after its approval in the morning hours in the House of Representatives (Deputies).

This Thursday, the party leader gave a press conference in the basement of the Legislative Palacewhere he acknowledged that he did not believe that Lacalle Pou would actually veto said article. “Today I thought that the president was not going to veto that article,” Manini Ríos began by saying.

“Reading the article carefully, one sees that what it seeks is to guarantee the average citizen that he will decide his vote based on truthful, complete, balanced, serious, plural information,” said the leader of the council on the section that obliged the “regulated dissemination services” to “provide citizens with information, analysis, opinions, comments and evaluations in a complete, impartial, serious, rigorous, plural and balanced manner between the political actors and with respect to them.”

In this regard, Manini Ríos explained that his political force believes that this gives “strength to democracy” since it avoids “images outside the reality of what a candidate or political party is.” “We thought that, if common sense prevails, this would remain firm,” he added.

Manini Ríos went further and said that, in his opinion, the media law has articles “much more controversial than this one” and that his political party agreed to vote for it in exchange for introducing the same one.

“We don’t mind being alone”

Regarding the fact that today is the third veto by Lacalle Pou to initiatives of CA, Manini Ríos said that this responds to his political force “explores issues that go beyond political correctness” and that there are “interests that are affected.” “CA will continue to touch the interests that it has to touch,” he stressed.

“We are left alone, just as we are left alone with the debts, with the change in policy on drug addiction, just as we are left alone with public safety measures, we are left alone in many aspects,” said Manini Ríos, adding: “It does not bother us to be left alone, because ultimately we are aware that we are acting according to what we feel.”

“Of course, there is no discussion about whether or not to remain in the coalition. CA has always been known for looking at the mountain and not the tree,” he clarified.
