The presidential candidate for the National Party, Alvaro Delgado, proposed to award “a financial prize” to students who belong to the poorest sectors and finish high school, while his rival Broad Front, Yamandú Orsi, He came out to ask them to “do it now”, in a new confrontation in the framework of the campaign facing the elections 2024.

Delgado made these statements after the PN convention where the formula was ratified with Valeria Ripollwhile Orsi’s questioning pointed out that it is the same political sign of the president Luis Lacalle Pou and considered that “if he proposes it, it is because he knows the costs it entails.”

Delgado considered his initiative as “something very innovative, which has no precedents in Uruguay, but yes in some countries of the world,” where he highlighted that favorable results were seen.

The white candidate considered that the dropout rate in secondary education “is a big problem” and warned: “We cannot think of being the most developed country Latin America, If we do not change that figure and that paradigm.”

Although he avoided giving figures, Delgado assured that these resources would be “the best invested of all” and stated: “It will never be an expense, it is an investment and an opportunity to reach the point where there is not a single boy in Uruguay who has not finished high school.”

Yamandú Orsi’s response

Quickly, the aspirant of the Broad Front He took up the challenge and, when asked by Telemundo, said: “If we get into government, he says… I would like them to do it now that they are in government.”

“If he proposes it, it is because he knows the costs that he has. Someone who was in the Secretariat of the Presidency knows,” said Orsi about the possible investment and insisted that it is necessary “to put it to the president so that he can begin.”
