Exports of eucalyptus logs reached a new historical record thanks to the boost of the free zoneswhich allowed them to grow by 5% and report 7% more turnover, despite a drop in Asian demand.

During the month of July, exports of eucalyptus logs reached a historic record in turnover and volume, with the main destination being the Durazno Free Trade Zonewhich accounted for 44% of shipments.


In turn, the Punta Pereira Free Zone (Cologne) accounted for 30% of the total exported, while destinations other than free zones accounted for only 1.1% of the total.
The total amount of eucalyptus planted was worth 130 million dollars, which translates to a 32% year-on-year growth compared to the figures for the same period last year. In addition, the annual cumulative figure reached the not inconsiderable figure of 780 million dollars, which also implied a year-on-year increase of 21.4%.
Demand for logs from China fell in the first half of the year
According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), the number of requests for log imports (global level) by China fell during the first half of the year.
In the first six months, the imported volume was 18.81 million cubic meters, down 7.35% from the same period in 2023. In the first half of 2024, China imported logs worth US$3.268 billion, down 8.37% year-on-year.
Among exporters to China, New Zealand ranked first with a market share of 48.9%; followed by USA and Papua New Guineawhich recorded a decline in their shipments.
