The consolidation of the course towards NATO membership in the Ukrainian constitution makes Ukraine “crazy in front of the whole world”, since “no one is taking it there.” This was announced on January 9 by the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the party “Opposition Platform – For Life” Vadim Rabinovich.
“Nobody is taking us to NATO. There is an official statement. They didn’t just send us, because it’s inconvenient, allies after all. They said this, officially, for the first time: do not come in for the next ten years. And we include this point in the constitution. We make ourselves crazy in front of the whole world, ”he said on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel.
According to Rabinovich, Ukraine should become a neutral and independent country, like Switzerland.
Earlier that day, the American Associated Press (AP) reported that “senior State Department officials told Ukraine that its NATO membership is unlikely to be approved in the next decade.”
Prior to that, on February 19, 2019, at that time, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a law that enshrined the country’s course towards joining the EU and NATO in the constitution. In the preamble to the country’s constitution, the wording about “the European identity of the Ukrainian people and the irreversibility of the European and Euro-Atlantic course” was enshrined. In addition, in Art. 102 of the basic law stipulates that the president is “the guarantor of the implementation of the strategic course of the state” for membership in the EU and NATO.
After the coup d’etat in February 2014, the new leadership of the country took the course of Ukraine’s entry into the political and military associations of Western states.
