Walkner still second in the Dakar Rally despite losing time

The previous leader Sam Sunderland fell back to fourth place (+5: 38 minutes). The new front runner is the Frenchman Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha). Last year’s winner Kevin Benavides (ARG / KTM / + 5: 23) is third just behind Walkner (+5: 12).

Walkner kept the damage on the long section – 402 of the 701 km were counted – within limits. Together with Sunderland, who started three minutes earlier, he followed the roadbook information. “But we were wrong and looked around for 15 minutes for sure. But that’s part of it. Towards the end I pushed hard,” said Kuchler.

On Monday he is allowed to start later because of the moderate daily result and can orientate himself on tracks. “I’ll try to use the good starting position. But everything can change suddenly every day.” Chilean Jose Ignacio Cornejo (Honda) won the day. He is more than 26 minutes behind in ninth place in the overall standings.

Co-favorite Daniel Sanders had to retire due to an arm injury after a fall.
