Up to minus ten degrees: cold but sunny from Tuesday

“After Monday we have a sunny winter week ahead of us: There will be little precipitation until about mid-January,” says Liliane Hofer from the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).

The beginning of the new week starts with cloudy weather. Today’s Monday brings initially thick clouds and at times a lot of precipitation – especially in the south of the state. The snowfall line moves between low altitudes and 500 meters. “In the southern mountain region, around 20 centimeters of fresh snow can be expected. In the central area, around five centimeters,” says Hofer. The temperatures are between minus four and plus three degrees.

As early as Tuesday, the weather is improving and sunny but cold days are ahead. On Tuesday morning the last snowflakes can be expected, in the afternoon the sun fights its way through the remaining clouds and the temperatures rise from the morning minus degrees to up to two degrees Celsius.

Wednesday brings high pressure influence. High fog can therefore increase in the lowlands, otherwise only a few cloud fields are to be expected in isolated cases. “The sun will not be able to fight its way through the cloud cover everywhere, the air will remain very cool,” says Hofer. In the morning hours you can expect frosty temperatures of minus ten to minus four degrees, in the afternoon the temperatures are between minus four to minus one degree.

Ideal weather in the mountains

Thursday also brings sunny but cold weather again. In the morning some cloud fields move through the state, but in the afternoon the sun comes through again and the thermometer shows temperatures in the plus range in the afternoon – namely up to three degrees.

Due to the influence of high pressure, bright sunshine can also be expected on Friday. In the lowlands, however, the danger of fog increases, while there is “almost perfect skiing weather” in the mountains, says Hofer. This weather situation is also to be expected for the coming weekend, which should especially please Upper Austria’s winter sports enthusiasts.

“We are starting the off-season today and of course the local guests are particularly important to us here,” says Dietmar Tröbinger, Managing Director of OÖ Seilbahnholding. “The most important components are the weather and the snow. At the beginning of January we had to work mainly with artificial snow due to the high temperatures, in the past few days a lot of fresh snow has been added. All valley runs are open and we are looking forward to many day visitors this coming weekend”, says Troebinger. (cape)
