In the WUSV, the world union of shepherd dog clubs, around half a million friends and lovers of the German shepherd breed are internationally united.
Since 1988 the association, which takes care of the rearing and keeping of German Shepherds, has been organizing world championships in which the best dogs from the member states compete. This year’s World Cup took place in Spain with around 140 participating dogs from 25 nations.
The dogs were rated in three areas – tracking, obedience and protection. Roland Haselmaier won the Austria-wide competitions with his dog Woodstock from the Pixner company and started with the number AT 1. Woodstock then demonstrated its class over three days and received excellent ratings from the competition judges. The dog achieved a total of 281 points and thus the sixth place. The first place came on 287 points, the third on 282 points.

Intensive training is required for such success. Haselmaier trains his four-year-old male dog every day. At least half an hour is devoted to the special training on average. In addition, there is endurance training because the dog’s fitness plays a major role. The canine athlete, who also works as a breeder, is supported by a whole team of helpers. Protection workers, trackers, fitness trainers and many supporters during the training have contributed to the success.
“I’m proud of the placement”
“The World Championships in Spain was really great. I am very happy about the many contacts that are made and maintained there. I am very proud of Woodstock’s excellent placement and really satisfied with our performance. All participating dogs were excellently trained and straight At the top, the performances are very close, “says the Wippenham dog athlete, who was also the best Austrian participant with his placement.
Many friends and acquaintances were delighted that Woodstock was among the world’s best. On Facebook there were several thousand views and many congratulations and of course the family and friends congratulated and celebrated accordingly.
“Dogs are friends for life and I can only recommend engaging with them. Those who enjoy it can, like me, take part in dog sports, but shepherds are also family dogs that enrich life,” says Roland Haselmaier. (planitzer)
