The director of the Kornspeicher Theater, Peter Kowatsch, is banking on the new and the tried and tested in the cultural year 2022. The “Varieté Grenier” will be a future fixed point. Magicians, jugglers, artists, show talents and burlesque dancers will appear on the cabaret every last Thursday of the month from March and make Corona forget for one evening. Incidentally, “Grenier” is the French word for granary, granary. As is well known, the listed building from the Renaissance period in the center of Wels used to be used as a granary.
Kowatsch, who took over the theater with around 140 seats in autumn 2020, would like to develop the house “into a pulsating cultural powerhouse for cabaret, children and creative people”.
Rehearsal start for Elsie and Ovil
Rehearsals and preparations for the children’s play “Elsie and Ovil – On the Road with the Emperor” based on the first book by Wels author Gerlinde Bäck-Moder with the newly founded Kornspeicher children and youth ensemble have already begun.

Denise Muster as Elsie, Domenico Grafeneder as Ovil and the well-known night watchman and city guide Hubert Krexhammer as Emperor Maximilian can be seen in the main roles. Gudrun Moser is the director. The election march driver has been involved in children’s theater for many years. The five performances will take place in May as part of the “Oktogon” series of events on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the city of Wels.
The puppet theater and fairytale performances are very popular with the youngest visitors, and both will continue to be held regularly. The Kasperl has two performances per month, fairy tale Sundays take place once a month.

The balance of the last cultural year of the cabaret looks mixed. “The children’s performances worked well, but the adults showed a certain reluctance. Every day that we were able to play was an important day for us,” emphasizes Kowatsch, who hopes that there will be no new lockdown and normality will soon return.
This year guests at the Kornspeicher are the actress Julia Stemberger, the Medley Folk Band, the duo Arc en Ciel with chansons and the saxophonist Andreas See. (krai)
