Unemployed: The Steyr region remains at the bottom in Upper Austria

It is not a new finding. When the economic thermometer drops when the cold snaps, there is frost on the job market in Steyr. Setbacks in the economy are harder to feel in the Steyr region than elsewhere due to the high level of industrialization.

With the unemployment rate rising to 7.4 percent compared to the previous month (6.0 percent), employment in Steyr lagged behind all other districts in Upper Austria in December. Austria-wide, this value is still cheaper because the national average is 8.1 percent, while Upper Austria only has a rate of 5.5 percent.

Behind the unemployment rate of 7.4 percent lies the fate of 1,896 men and 1,388 women who are affected by job loss. One consolation may be that the situation in the district was even worse exactly a year ago: After all, the December figure has now fallen by 20.6 percent, and under 25s benefit from this trend almost as much as the 50+ age group.

In a month-on-month comparison, long-term unemployment has improved within one year. 748 people have been registered for more than a year, which is 24.4 percent fewer. Participation in training increased from 592 in the previous year to 680, while 31 apprenticeship seekers were offered 50 vacancies. (feh)
