One to ten years imprisonment: charges brought against youth gangs

There were around 20 young people who rioted in the Ebelsberg district of Linz in mid-November. They shot firecrackers, set fire to a patrol car belonging to the alarmed police and also wanted to lure an officer into an ambush and set fire to it. The Ebelsberg police station should go up in flames on New Year’s Eve. Some of them have now been charged.

“The young people face one to ten years’ imprisonment, with some of them having previous offenses aggravating,” says Ulrike Breiteneder, spokeswoman for the Linz Public Prosecutor’s Office. The 20-year-old ringleader, who was arrested before Christmas, is threatened with severe collective violence, incitement to serious damage to property and attempted incitement to deliberate serious bodily harm.

Boasted on social media

The three suspects who were first investigated, aged between 16 and 20, were also charged. They were arrested quickly because they had filmed their brutal attack on the police, put them online and also boasted on social media such as the short video service “TikTok”. They are also accused of serious community violence. The 16-year-old from Linz, who confessed to having set fire to the police car, also has to answer for serious damage to property. He faces 1.5 years imprisonment. Three young people between the ages of 14 and 16, who beat up two of the accused after confessing, are on trial on January 21 for serious bodily harm and attempted coercion. There is still no negotiation date for the others. A 14-year-old was shown at large. (mis)
