He Mayor of Paysandú, Nicholas Oliverajoined the wave of criticism from the ruling party against the candidate of the Broad Front (FA), Yamandú Orsiand called on him to publicly debate and “make commitments” during the campaign towards the 2024 elections.
This Thursday, interviewed by radio 970 Universal, the departmental chief harshly charged against the FA presidential candidate, whom he compared with “a 15th birthday girl doing exteriors”for his refusal to delve into certain topics despite their public exposure.
“If you don’t speak out during the campaign, if you don’t express yourself, if you don’t make commitments, if you look like a 15th birthday girl doing outdoor activities and you feel that this is the way to do politics, it’s not something that’s wrong for that candidate,” he said ironically.
In this regard, Olivera said that his comments are not necessarily a criticism, but perhaps the Frente Amplio member “is not allowed to speak” by his political force, or that he “feels that this is the way to campaign.”
“Where has a campaign been seen in Uruguay where the candidate does not talk about proposals, nor think, nor do what he says? We are two months away from the Uruguayans choosing,” he continued.
Asked if Orsi’s silence was a strategy given that he is leading the polls ahead of the elections, Olivera said: “He may do well, but people are not stupid.” “If you don’t come out and make commitments, people will have no way to complain to you later,” added the leader of the party. National Party (PN).
“Bordaberry is a reliable guy”
In another order, when asked if he believes that the return of Pedro Bordaberry to politics and the ranks of the Colorado Party (PC) could take votes away from the PN, Olivera said that “the more who are in this the better, from all the parties.”
“A guy like Bordaberry is reliable, has experience, and adds value. So, I’m glad he’s here. I don’t know who he’ll get votes from, that’s for him to see. Things are hot in the PC, that’s good,” he said, laughing.
