The fire in a multi-storey residential building in the Bronx (New York), in which 19 people died, began due to a malfunction of an electric heater. This was announced on Sunday, January 9, by the head of the New York City Fire Department, Daniel Nigro.
“It all started with a faulty electric heater. This caused the fire, “Nigro said at a press conference.
According to him, the fire initially broke out in a bunk apartment, the fire engulfed the entire house only after the family living in this apartment did not close the door behind them during the evacuation.
As a result, the firefighter added, the second and third floors of the building were on fire, while the smoke enveloped the house completely.
The head of the fire department concluded that the victims were “literally on every floor of the building.”
Earlier Sunday, New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed media reports that nine children and ten adults were killed in a fire in the Bronx.
In total, 63 people were injured in the fire, 32 of them were hospitalized in serious condition, their lives are in danger.
The fire occurred on the third floor of a 19-story building at the intersection of Tibaut Avenue and Folin Street at about 10:50 am (18:50 Moscow time).
