Uruguay will incorporate the photovoltaic solar energy to the range of renewable sources in 2026, to continue advancing in the second energy transformation of the country and in the decarbonization of the economy, offering more alternatives to users to use a sustainable energy matrix.

This was announced by the president of the National Administration of State Power Plants and Electric Transmissions (UTE), Silvia Emaldi, during the forum organized by the public company regarding energy transformation. The forum was held with the aim of encouraging business and residential customers to adopt alternative energy sources; and national and international experts participated in it.

The meeting took place at the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU)and was particularly focused on promoting sustainability trends and the decarbonization of the electrical demand, not necessarily only in large clients, but also in homes and smaller businesses. Above all, he pointed to the electric mobility already thermal conditioning solutions; in a context in which the percentage of renewable energies used in Uruguay is getting higher and higher.

In this regard, Emaldi said that 40% of the primary energy matrix still depends on fossil fuels, so the next major goal of UTE is to add solar photovoltaic energy as an alternative renewable source for its customers and, thus, maintain the percentage of this type of sources. In this way, citizens will be able to access safe electrical energy and sustainable.

Regarding electric mobility, one of the key points of the day, the president of the electric company recalled that there are 9,000 vehicles of this type in the country. In addition, she added that there are 317 points available, which will be 370 by the end of the year and that in 2025 fast chargers will be incorporated in destinations with intensive use.

The best semester in hydroelectric energy

UTE The government reported that the first half of 2024 was one of the best in five years for power plants due to high rainfall, while the share of power plant energy generation was one of the worst in 20 years.

According to official figures on the production of the dams of Big Leap and Black River, managed by UTE, They had a production of 3,402 GWh during the first half of this year. A little less than in 2019 – five years ago – when a peak of 3,896 GWh was reached.

In this way, 51% of the energy generation was supplied by electric dams. Meanwhile, the total generated by them was three times greater than in the same period last year. However, if the dams are compared, Salto Grande managed to triple its interannual production, while those of Río Negro managed to quadruple their production if compared to the first half of last year.
