There were similar Monday values in the middle and end of November, which resulted in a lockdown throughout Austria. After the Christmas holidays there was a lot of testing again, but not a record.
A total of 634,778 tests were carried out from Sunday to Monday. The majority, namely 539,085, were meaningful PCR tests. Most of the PCR tests, namely 64 percent or 345,535, were done in Vienna. Although it was the first Monday on which most of the PCR tests were registered, the absolute record for tests was achieved on December 28, 2021 with 2.4 million corona tests, of which 1.96 million were PCR tests.
The positive rate of PCR tests in Austria is currently already two percent. This 24-hour value is above the average of the previous week at 1.9 percent. Thus, the number of active cases continued to rise sharply. On Monday, 77,047 people in Austria were suffering from a SARS-CoV infection. That is 7,290 more than the day before. A week ago, on January 3, there were still 34,330 active cases.

The current increase in new infections is well above the average of the past seven days with 8,771 cases. Most recently, the Monday values in November were similarly high. 11,889 new infections were reported on November 15, and as many as 13,806 on November 22. The previously highest 24-hour value for new infections was measured on November 19 with 15,809 cases.
This significant increase is mainly due to the more contagious Omikron variant, which had already replaced Delta as the predominant mutation in Austria at the end of the year. So far, 25,102 cases of the more infectious mutation have been detected, according to an update by the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) on Monday. In the first calendar week alone, there were 15,102 records, in the last week of 2021 there were still 7,394 records.
Most Omikron cases have so far been detected in Vienna with a total of 10,220, but the federal capital has analyzed the most precisely. Because pre-sequencing is already taking place in Vienna, the omicron numbers are also much higher than in the rest of the country: in Salzburg there were 4,189, in Lower Austria 3,171, in Tyrol 2,755, in Upper Austria 2,256, in Styria 849, in Vorarlberg 845, in Burgenland 563 and discovered 254 cases of the mutation in Carinthia.
The increase in the number of infections is currently also affecting occupancy in hospitals. There are currently 935 people in hospital because of a SARS-CoV-2 infection, 24 more than the day before. 264 people need intensive medical care because of Covid-19. That number has increased by two since Sunday and has decreased by 56 patients in a week.
Seven deaths have been reported since Sunday. 96 deaths have been recorded in the past seven days. In total, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 13,855 deaths in Austria since it broke out.
The seven-day incidence in Austria is 687.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. On Sunday it was still 603.5. The federal state with the highest incidence is currently Salzburg with 1,409.8, followed by Tyrol with 1,220.9, Vienna with 919, Vorarlberg with 628.7, Upper Austria with 524.3, Lower Austria with 508.7, Carinthia with 394.1, Styria with 365.9 and Burgenland with 279.
In absolute numbers, Vienna is currently at the top with 3,340 new infections within 24 hours. This exceeded the previous high in the federal capital – 3,191 were recorded last Wednesday. 1,573 new cases were reported in Lower Austria, 1,512 in Tyrol, 1,488 in Upper Austria, 1,222 in Salzburg, 650 in Styria, 441 each in Carinthia and Vorarlberg and 137 in Burgenland.
More than 1.35 million confirmed cases
The number of people vaccinated against Corona is stagnating in Austria. 18,093 immunizations were carried out on Sunday. According to the data in the e-vaccination pass, 6,651,524 people (74.5 percent of the population) have received at least one vaccination. 6,327,627 people and thus 70.8 percent of Austrians have valid vaccination protection. 3,861,090 or 43.2 percent of Austrians have already received the booster.
Of the 18,093 vaccinations on Sunday, 2,013 were first stitches, that is 11.13 percent. 5,350 vaccinations were second stings. Most of the vaccinations on Sunday were third stitches. The booster was used 10,730 times (59.3 percent).
The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is still highest in Burgenland at 76.5 percent. In Lower Austria 72.9 percent of the population have valid vaccination protection, in Styria 70.9 percent. After Vienna (69.7), Tyrol (69.6), Vorarlberg (67.9), Salzburg (67.7) and Carinthia (67.6), Upper Austria still brings up the rear with 66.6 percent.
There have been more than 1.35 million confirmed corona cases in Austria since the start of the pandemic. Around 1.26 million people have recovered since the outbreak of the epidemic.
