Active Heritage claimed the protection of seven houses in the Downtown Montevideo. “There are seven houses that have precautionary protection, several of which are being demolished because the City Council understood that they had no heritage value,” said the founder of Patrimonio Activo, Erich Schaffner.

In this regard, he recalled that there is a decree since 2019 that provides precautionary protection and requires the Montevideo City Hall to determine whether buildings built before 1960 have heritage value in light of the demolition permits issued for them. “If they have heritage value, these buildings must be preserved, even if only in part,” he stressed.
“We understand that these are buildings of very high value, that they are rare, and that they must be preserved. Therefore, the judgments of the IMM technicians cannot be colored by subjectivity,” he said.
“The common denominator of these buildings is that they were built 100 years ago. They are part of the fabric, historic cityscape of the citywhich are foundational elements of our urban landscape. These are the things that tourists come to see and marvel at,” he explained.
On the other hand, he clarified that the organization is not against the construction of new buildings, but that it is necessary to preserve the facades. “Let it continue to generate dwelling, but that housing continues to be generated in a sustainable, “preserving these valuable elements of the city,” he said. He also said that it would be advisable to generate “specialized labor for the restoration of these projects.”
