The population of Ebensee is satisfied with the quality of life in the place. In an online survey in autumn it was awarded an average of seven out of ten possible points. In contrast, the respondents rated the structural development in recent years with only three points. Criticism also comes from experts. The Ebenseer architect Andreas Zohner has been criticizing the loss of historical buildings (workers’ houses, taverns), the increasing sealing and increasing traffic for years.
After the controversial demolition of the “Gasthaus zur Ebensee”, Zohner initiated an Agenda 21 process that is unique in Upper Austria. The aim is to develop guidelines for building culture together with the population. There was already an architecture walk in autumn and the survey cited above. After a forced Corona break, work is now continuing on the project.
“It is crucial that our results do not gather dust in the drawer at the end of the day,” says Zohner. “We would like to show politicians ways of obtaining funding so that one or the other can also be implemented. However, cooperation with other historic working-class communities such as Laakirchen would also make sense. Building culture is an essential factor for the local identity of a community.”
