Salzburgerhof in Zell am See: tee off in an oasis of letting go

An attraction of the Wellness-Schlössl is the Salzburgerhof’s pool area.

A picturesque setting with a lake surrounded by mountains, sporting activities paired with wellness and culinary delights: this is what awaits guests at the Salzburgerhof in Zell am See. “We have many guests who love golf,” says hotel director Melanie Scheffenacker to the OÖN. The nearby Zell am See-Kaprun-Saalbach Golf Club with two 18-hole championship courses, one of 18 “Leading Golf Courses” in Austria, is ideal for this.

Another special feature of the “Kitzsteinhorn” and “Schmittenhöhe” courses, which are nestled in the landscape, is the view of the glacier. Whether it’s a long tee shot, a short chip shot or a hole shot, the player must not allow himself to be too distracted by the unique landscape during his game. Otherwise the ball will sink in the water or end up in the bunker.

Unique relaxation

What applies to the golf club also applies to the Salzburgerhof. The 5-star superior hotel is one of the top addresses in the state of Salzburg. As the center of the vacation, it offers unique relaxation with wellness and culinary delights – not just for lawn sports enthusiasts. The SPA stands for “Sanitas per aquam” and “Sanitas per alpem” – for health through the healing power of water and the mountains. “For us, it’s about feeling better and collecting moments of happiness,” says Scheffenacker.

Dual leadership

The Wellness-Schlössl in the middle of the Feng Shui garden offers a world of its own, an oasis of letting go. “Here, guests can recharge their energy and gain lasting strength for everyday life,” says Scheffenacker, convinced of the wellness offer, which has been awarded three Relax Guide lilies.

Scheffenacker has been responsible for the hotel for ten months with co-director Bettina Tiefenbacher. They run the family-run house of hospitality in the spirit of the founding Holleis family, but are also gently developing it further – for example in the form of digitalization and sustainability (waste separation in the rooms, saving light and water).

Gisela Holleis, senior manager and grande dame of the industry, is still indispensable at the age of 94. “She is present – voluntarily. And that’s nice. It is simply her life’s work, and she still knows and greets the many regular guests personally.”

Family-orientated work of art

Speaking of family: The Salzburgerhof is not just the family business of the Holleis couple. Gisela and Wilhelm (he died in 2020) started with a small bed and breakfast in 1967 and continuously expanded it into one of the best establishments in the state of Salzburg – without forgetting that the guest feels welcomed and comfortable as a family. The employees also feel this, many of whom have been in the house for a long time – “up to 38 years,” says Scheffenacker, not without pride. The Salzburgerhof therefore does not experience any of the staffing concerns that generally plague the catering industry.

Three Gault-Millau toques

The family-run work of art is visible in the people: This includes, of course, head chef Stefan Reiter – responsible for three Gault-Millau toques, three Falstaff forks and two a la carte stars. Just the thought of marinated tuna with avocado, sesame & calamondin vinaigrette or saddle of rabbit in pasta sheets, yuzu pea puree & cashmere curry makes the palate sing. Also indispensable are restaurant manager, winemaker and certified sommelier Günther Rettenbacher and bar manager Peter Wimmer.

And so, after wellness and culinary delights, the guests are taken to golf by shuttle bus or can start their journey home after a special experience and relaxation.
