Forest fire in Styria: difficult fire-fighting work

The operation is proving difficult due to the inaccessible location; firefighters have to be brought to the fire by helicopter and secured by mountain rescue. According to a fire department spokesman, there are several embers in the area. It is feared that the fire will not be “over today” despite the forecast rainfall.

A visitor to the nearby Palfauer Wasserlochklamm noticed heavy smoke coming from the adjacent rock face on Saturday and alerted the emergency services. The fire brigade was able to identify a half-hectare fire nearby. The visitors to the gorge were immediately evacuated by the Landl mountain rescue service and the gorge was then closed off.
