It is not wrong to believe that a world-class European film festival like Venice focuses on an international showcase. It is just that it has long since stopped being true: when the 81st edition starts tomorrow, Wednesday, everything will be back to normal after a mixed year. That means that the lagoon city will become a branch of the US film industry until September 7th, which will “enrich” the metropolis, which is already plagued by mega-mass tourism, with the magnetism of stars.
A “temporary mini-Hollywood” was prevented in 2023 by the strikes of the US actors’ union, which banned major promotional tours that would have been so important for the fall and winter cinema seasons.
This year, the opening film alone will reinforce the old tone: 26 years after part one, Tim Burton is presenting the sequel to his horror comedy “Beetlejuice”. The stars in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” are the old ones: Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton.
