“Bed Rotting” loosely translates to “lounging around in bed” and is the absolute opposite of activity and productivity. Unlike traditional lazing around, it’s not just about letting go of obligations, but about moving as little as possible and not having even the slightest hint of a guilty conscience.
Self-imposed absolute laziness has become a global TikTok trend this summer. Proponents see this chosen immobility as important self-care and celebrate this form of extreme relaxation. Under the hashtag #bedrotting, there are numerous videos on social media of young people lying in bed, wrapped in blankets, sleeping and, in the truest sense of the word, simply doing nothing.
Pathological inactivity?
In a world characterized by hectic activity and productivity, rest and doing nothing are often associated with shame, says sleep scientist Vanessa Hill on her Instagram channel. Allowing yourself to rest without feeling guilty is an act of self-love. For many young people, it is a temporary way out of a performance-oriented society. You allow yourself to relax for a moment without feeling pressure or having to achieve anything.
