Nevertheless, KAPU is anything but mainstream. The cultural center is an underground hub, is largely run on a voluntary basis and has managed to remain open to new things for four decades.
“The KAPU had to happen”
It all started in the early 1980s. It is not easy to say exactly when KAPU was founded. The first punk concerts took place in what was then the youth center of the Socialist Youth (SJ), but the club was not officially registered until 1984. “KAPU was not planned, it happened because it had to happen,” says Günther Ziehlinger, who has been one of the two managing directors since 2010. At that time, a lively, alternative cultural scene developed, for which Linz is still known today. Young bands and activists filled the cultural vacuum in the city. Alongside the Stadtwerkstatt, KAPU was one of the hotspots and soon became a popular place for bands to stop on their tours.
