Two serious, independent traffic accidents occurred on Tuesday morning on the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) in the area of the south and north portal of the Gleinalm tunnel (Graz-Umgebung / Leoben districts). A total of two drivers were seriously injured and one passenger was fatally injured, reported the Styrian police.
Hit the truck with no brakes
A 33-year-old Upper Austrian came across the end of the tunnel barrier in his car just before the north portal at around 9.45 am. The man drove unrestrained into a truck standing in front of him. The driver and his co-driver (61, also from Upper Austria) were freed from the wreck by autobahn policemen: Using tools from a truck, the officers broke open the doors of the accident vehicle and were able to do so for Provide first aid. The 33-year-old was transported to the LKH Kalwang with the rescue. The C17 rescue helicopter brought the 61-year-old to the UKH Graz, where he succumbed to serious injuries.
Small truck slid against a concrete crash barrier
A 36-year-old Hungarian living in the Graz area came across a semi-trailer truck driving in front of him in a small truck in front of the south portal of the tunnel at around 8:30 a.m. As a result, the small truck slid to the left and crashed into a concrete crash barrier.
