On September 4th, the time has come: the 200th anniversary of the birth of Anton Bruckner, a world-class composer. The state of Upper Austria and its partners want to celebrate the anniversary with a 24-hour birthday party. The festival will begin and end with two innovative projects in Linz’s St. Mary’s Cathedral, for which Bruckner wrote several works (even though it was only under construction at the time).
During the day there will be events in important Bruckner locations such as St. Florian, Ansfelden, Windhaag/Freistadt and Kronstorf. The highlights are two concerts with the Bruckner Orchestra under Markus Poschner (11 a.m., St. Florian Basilica) and the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst (7 p.m., open-air stage next to the Ansfelden parish church). “It should be a birthday celebration that is appropriate to the greatness of the world-famous composer Bruckner,” said Governor Thomas Stelzer at yesterday’s program presentation.
Norbert Trawöger, artistic director of the cultural EXPO for the Bruckner year, is proud that the offers have already sparked “a broad movement”. For Linz’s deputy mayor, Karin Hörzing, it is important to put the artist Bruckner at the center. And Linz’s cultural councilor, Doris Lang-Mayerhofer, is certain: “Anton Bruckner would have enjoyed the festival.”
The program of the 24-hour party:
00.00-04.00 | Silent Echoes: Sound artist Bill Fontana broadcasts from the Notre Dame Church and the Dachstein Ice Caves to the Mariendom in Linz.
04.00 | Bruckner’s birth hour: In front of the birthplace in Ansfelden, the ensemble quinTTTonic, Josef Baier with a water organ and Cordula Bösze play a serenade for Bruckner.
05.00-09.00 | Organ breakfast: Organists improvise on the Bruckner organ in the Old Cathedral in Linz, accompanied by coffee and croissants.
09.00 | The special post office in the Vöcklabruck State Music School opens.
10.00 | Dance performance “I Anton” by Silke Grabinger and her ensemble on the Stiftswiese in St. Florian.
