To de-escalate the situation around Ukraine, the United States requires Russia to ensure the transparency of military exercises taking place on its territory. This statement was made by the head of the press service of the US State Department Ned Price on Tuesday, January 11.
“We declare that in this case, de-escalation would imply the return of the Russian military to the barracks, an explanation of these maneuvers or their termination, the return of these heavy weapons to places of conventional storage,” he said at a press briefing, the recording of the speech was published on the State Department’s page in Twitter.
Ned Price also said that Washington welcomes the statement of the President of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev, about the imminent completion of the work of the CSTO forces in the country, and asked the peacekeeping contingent to quickly leave the republic.
On January 11, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba in a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed further joint actions, taking into account the following diplomatic contacts with Russia in the format of the NATO-Russia Council and the OSCE Permanent Council. Thus, Kiev and Washington reaffirmed their adherence to the principle of “no agreements on Ukraine without Ukraine.”
On the same day, talks between Russia and NATO on security guarantees were held in Geneva. They lasted approximately 7.5 hours. Discussions were held at the US Permanent Mission in a format closed to the press.
The talks on security guarantees will be held in three stages: on January 10, a meeting took place in Geneva, on January 12 in Brussels – a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council, and the next day consultations are scheduled at the Vienna platform of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
