Kuleba and Blinken agreed on the steps of the two countries towards Russia

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba on Tuesday, January 11, in a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, discussed further joint actions, taking into account the following diplomatic contacts with Russia in the format of the NATO-Russia Council and the OSCE Permanent Council. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

“Dmitry Kuleba and Anthony Blinken discussed the further implementation of a comprehensive package of deterring Russia from further aggression, in particular, tough economic sanctions against the Russian Federation and the practical strengthening of the defense capability of the Ukrainian armed forces,” the message says.

In addition, the ministry stressed that Kiev and Washington have reaffirmed their adherence to the principle of “no agreements on Ukraine without Ukraine.”

The department also noted that the head of the State Department shared with his Ukrainian counterpart the content of the Russian-American talks in Geneva on January 10.

On the same day, talks between Russia and NATO on security guarantees were held in Geneva. They lasted approximately 7.5 hours. Discussions were held at the US Permanent Mission in a format closed to the press.

On January 11, the Kremlin said it saw no reason for optimism after the talks. At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who represented Moscow at the talks, assesses the very fact of the conversation positively.

The talks on security guarantees will be held in three stages: on January 10, a meeting took place in Geneva, on January 12 in Brussels – a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council, and the next day consultations are scheduled at the Vienna platform of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. It follows from the documents that the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia. Also, Russia and NATO commit themselves not to create conditions that could be regarded as a threat by the other side.
