It is one of the most frequently asked questions these days directed at children and young people: “Well, are you looking forward to school?” In total, there are exactly 199,742 pupils in Upper Austria, divided into 979 schools, who will start a new school year on Monday.

15,253 of them have been looking forward to this day for years – that’s how many first-graders the state education authority counts this year. Most of them – 1,888 to be exact – attend a primary school in Linz. Six-year-old Alva is one of them. Her expectations? “Fun and good grades.” Benjamin, who is the same age and is one of the 1,095 first-graders in the Braunau district, can also call himself a “smart fox.”
Although their premiere next Monday is accompanied by a little nervousness and excitement, the little ones are more excited than excited. “I’m looking forward to learning the most,” says Sara from the Urfahr-Umgebung district with a broad smile. She will finally be able to read books like her big sister. Sara and her peers are at least as curious about their classmates. There are almost 3000 new children in the Mühlviertel elementary schools. Districts with more than a thousand new children starting school are Linz and Braunau, as well as the Linz-Land district (1548) and the Vöcklabruck district (1384 children).

In addition to the first-graders, 850 adults are starting a new chapter this year – as teachers. There are also 56 career changers. They too will have heard the “question of all questions” frequently this summer and hopefully answered with an enthusiastic “Yes!”
