This is the third reported test of a hypersonic missile in the country after one carried out in September 2021 and another last week.
The U.S. Treasury Department said five North Koreans sanctioned they are “responsible for acquiring assets for (North Korea’s) weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile-related programs.”
The missile carrying a “hypersonic glide warhead (…) hit a target at 1,000 kilometers,” KCNA reported.
The missile flew 700 kilometers at an altitude of 60 kilometers at Mach 10 speed (ten times the speed of sound), and they can change course mid-flight, making them difficult to detect and intercept.
Treasury sanctions prohibit any transactions by US citizens with designated persons and foreign companies that engage with them could also be subject to sanctions.
One of the sanctioned North Koreans, Choe Myong Hyon, is based in Russia and is linked to a North Korean institution, SANS, already sanctioned for its involvement in North Korean weapons development. The other four, Sim Kwang Sok, Kim Song Hun, Kang Chol Hak and Pyon Kwang Chol, linked to this same institution based in China.
Tuesday’s test came as the UN Security Council was meeting to discuss North Korea’s arms program.
The US State Department spokesman, Ned Price, argued that the launch “violates multiple Security Council resolutions.”
