The High Commissioner of the UN for Human Rights, Volker Turkwarned on Monday that the world is at a “crossroads” and is heading toward a “dystopian future” filled with military escalations, repression and disinformation.
“We are at a crossroads. We can either continue down the current path — into a dangerous ‘new normal’ — and sleepwalk into a dystopian future. Or we can wake up and change the course of things for the good of ourselves, humanity and the planet,” Türk said at the start of the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
In a world shaken by conflict, Türk said, “States must not, cannot, accept flagrant disregard for international law.”

“The new normal for the world,” he said, “cannot be endless, ruthless military escalation and ever more horrific and technologically advanced methods of war, control and repression.”
Be responsible when choosing leaders
Türk also issued a warning against the “rampant dissemination of misinformation, which stifles facts and the ability to make free and informed decisions“. The High Commissioner also called on citizens to remain “vigilant” when choosing their leadersin a record year for elections around the world.
“With some elections already over, and more still to come this year, I urge all voters to keep in mind the issues that matter most to them,” he said.
“Be wary of loud voicesof the strong guys who throw glitter in our eyes, offering Illusory solutions that deny reality“, he noted.
“Know that when A group is singled out as a scapegoat of the evils of society, One day you could be next“, he added.
Despite this bleak outlook, the UN High Commissioner stated that “We can and must take another path“, “guided by human rights and universal values.”
