The time to export

September 9, 2024 – 12:45

International trade is not just about exchanging goods, but about opening doors to new opportunities.

In both work meetings and in some consulting cases, one question always arises and becomes inevitable: Do I have to export? These companies that do not do so today are afraid of being out of date and believe that the train has already left.

Based on my experience and the hours I have spent on this topic, I can only say one thing bluntly: “Dear friends, you are wrong.” Although there have been issues in recent times that have not motivated us to export, everything would indicate that, based on political decisions that are being implemented, we could become motivated again.

But this is a macro approach that organizations cannot exert direct pressure on, so the time to export is always. When I say “always,” I mean at any time. Together with the board of directors of the company, whether large or small and family-run, this decision must be transversal to the interests of those companies. That is, management levels must be involved in these projects and included in job descriptions.

In this way, we give substance to this task. Another important concept is that everything is exportable. Last May, I attended a training course at the Barcelona School of Management of the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, within the framework of Argentina’s “First Export Program”, and one of the most powerful concepts I heard was that everything can be exported.

A world eager for things, a clear identification of customers and good product communication guarantee the arrival of our product beyond the borders of Argentina. Of course, it is necessary to know tariff and process issues; having clear and orderly documentation will make the experience very pleasant. It is also necessary to understand that exporting is a learning process; this means that some mistakes can be made, but they are part of that process.

The road is long, but the satisfaction is not only economic; it is much greater, since seeing our product in other markets makes us feel that we are inserted in the world. That is an indescribable feeling. So, go ahead, make the decision, seek advice and go confidently towards the final objective: exporting your product. Good luck with that!
