Trouble at the university about the final salary

After two rounds of negotiations, the umbrella association of Austrian universities and the Public Service Union (GÖD) have reached an agreement. As of February 1, the salaries of the 53,000 nationwide employees under the university collective agreement will rise by 2.93 percent, as reported. However, a maximum of 116 euros. But not everyone is happy with the results. The waves are rising, also at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz.

“During the beginnings of the corona pandemic, we scientists were celebrated. A high, what an important contribution we have made to the fight against the coronavirus so far,” says Bernhard Jakoby, Chairman of the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsensors and Chairman of the Works Council for the scientific staff at the JKU. “Such a salary conclusion is a mockery.” Jakoby represents more than 2500 employees at the JKU. “Only the youngest employees benefit from the 2.93 percent,” says Jakoby. “The higher the rank, the steeper it goes downhill.” Professors and lecturers would only get 1.5 percent more salary.

The chairman of the umbrella organization, Vice Rector Michael Lang from the Vienna University of Economics and Business, points out the social aspect: “The degree ensures that university employees with lower incomes receive wage increases that are well above the inflation rate.”

There are three different types of employees at universities in Austria: civil servants, contract employees who have been taken on and employees covered by the collective agreement (KV). All employees hired since the beginning of 2004 fall under the collective agreement. Now that’s more than 80 percent of the staff.

The federal salary statement applies to the first two. This was renegotiated at the end of last year. Their salaries will be increased between 2.91 and 3.22 percent. That was also the aim of the CT negotiations.
