This was the case of Carlos Roaa former footballer who, after facing illnesses and a rising career, made a decision that surprised the world of sport: to leave the soccer to dedicate themselves to their faith.

“Lechuga” was a goalkeeper who shone in teams such as Lanús, Mallorca and the Argentine national team, with which he played in the 1998 World Cup. However, his life was not without obstacles. During a tour of Africacontracted malariaan illness that kept him off the courts for almost a year. But it was his faith as Seventh-day Adventist which helped him overcome that difficult moment, convinced that his devotion would guide him back to football. After recovering, Roa continued his successful career, standing out in important teams and being key in the rise of Majorca in Spanish football.
Despite tempting offers, including one from Manchester Unitedthe goalkeeper decided to retire at his best to follow a more spiritual calling. Some time later it was time to return to the courts because the goalkeeper felt that there was still a lot to offer. Once settled in the Albaceteafter some routine tests he was diagnosed with cancer, but far from thinking about retiring the goalkeeper gave his all to keep going. “The spiritual part allowed me to gain strength to move forward. My case, according to what the doctors told me, It was a miracle. God gave me another chance.has another plan for me in this life, because I am still here after having cancer and malaria,” said Roa.
Currently, the former national team player is linked to football as a goalkeeping coach. AEK Athenss, a club coached by Matías Almeyda and with which they won the championship last year. Lechuga’s story offers hope to those who are going through an illness and dream strongly of a speedy recovery.
