When Linz’s St. Mary’s Cathedral was completed and consecrated 100 years ago, it wasn’t actually finished yet. It was missing windows, floors, benches and all sorts of details. But that’s not all – above all, there was a lack of money. The costs over the 62 years of construction were enormous. The First World War brought construction to a near standstill and in the 1920s there was massive inflation. This led to such bizarre results that the construction costs in 1922 were as high as in the previous 60 years combined, says cathedral master Clemens Pichler.
