Ripe was declared victorious for a third consecutive six-year term by the National Electoral Council (CNE), accused of serving the government. After the result was announced, thousands of people protested throughout the country, including popular sectors traditionally close to Chavez, dispersed with tear gas and rubber bullets. Some 2,400 people ended up behind bars, including minors.

Lulawho has already called Maduro’s government “very unpleasant regime” with “authoritarian bias“, did not recognize the victory for lack of a “transparent scrutiny“, as did other Latin American countries, the United States and the European Union. “Lula intercedes for Venezuela,” read one of the banners. “Free all political prisoners“, others said.

“President Lula da Silva knows what it is like to be in captivity“said Andreína Baduel, one of the organizers of the march. “The lives of political prisoners are being subjected to a murder in slow motion in Venezuela just for thinking differently,” added the daughter of General Raúl Baduel, an old ally of Hugo Chavezwho died in prison in 2021 after breaking with the government.
