The deputy of the Radical Civic Union (UCR), Martín Arjol, One of the five deputies of his bloc who changed their vote and rejected the retirement mobility bill, asked that if the party must make the decision to expel them, “take it now.”
In radio statements, the legislator questioned that “In radicalism it seems that there are first and second class radicals, and that some of us, since we are from the interior, can do this to them.”
Arjol pointed directly at the senator and president of the centennial party, Martin Lousteauand the vice-chancellor of the UBA and former deputy, Emiliano Yacobittistating: “It seems strange to me when I see that the same people who want to kick me out, had another block two years ago.”
He also described the decision that he and his four other peers made as “difficult” and clarified: “Lor we did it with conviction. I believe that since that first approval until yesterday there are new facts, such as the veto, the fiscal balance that has shown a consistent decrease in inflation, and Finally, the meeting with the president (Javier Milei) where a relaxed discussion on economic matters took place.”
Arjol said in a conversation with Radio Mitre that Milei assured them that “in no way” had “animosity towards retirees”, and the president told them: “What I need is to achieve fiscal balance.”
In line with what the libertarian told them in the Casa Rosada, the deputy added: “I have nothing against retirees, both my parents are retirees, I would love for them to earn not only 300,000, but 600,000, but the issue is how we do it. If we do it in the Kirchnerist model“All we do is press the machine and we will put money in one pocket and take it out through another.”
Arjol’s statements come after 11 UCR deputies asked the president of the bloc, Rodrigo de Loredo, that the necessary means be arranged to remove the five rebels from space.
These legislators are, in addition to Arjol himself, Luis Picat, Mariano Campero, Mario Pablo Cervi and José Federico Tournier.
The letter from UCR deputies to Rodrigo de Loredo
In addition, a group of UCR deputies sent a letter to the president of the bloc, Rodrigo de Loredowhich states: ”It is our political duty act responsibly and firmly in the defense of convictions and values“as we did in the recent past against the previous government. With the same conviction we must put the brakes on the excesses of the current government, without prejudice to supporting initiatives that serve the national interest.”
Rodrigo De Loredo UCR Deputies
Rodrigo De Loredo, president of the UCR Deputies bloc.
In it, they made clear their disagreement with the vote of the aforementioned deputies: ”The deputies of the UNION CIVICA RADICAL bloc We express our displeasure and repudiation of the attitude adopted by five members of our bloc who broke a unanimous agreement and changed their vote to support the Government’s total veto of the Pension Law, thus causing a damage to the credibility and ethics of their radical positions in front of the citizens”.
”These facts, added to the unnecessary overacting of a photo with the President of the Nation, constitute a clear political message of belonging to the ruling partywhich is incompatible with belonging to the Radical Bloc, which is not part of the current government. We assume the responsibility of ensuring fiscal balance in Argentina but not at the expense of the weakest, such as retirees,” they added.
In addition, they considered that it is “A rethinking and reorganisation of the UCR Block of Deputies is necessary, allowing those who have chosen another path to follow it, and reaffirming the values of identity of our political space.”
“We are not resigned to the option of returning to the past or adapting to a present that is built on authoritarian practices. We have the duty to create an alternative for the future and to do so by rescuing the democratic values of the UCR: education, development, well-being, equity,” they concluded.
