Again and again, doctors appear at demonstrations against the corona measures or the corona vaccination and reinforce the attitude of the opponents with their statements. In Braunau, too, a well-known retired family doctor from the city recently spoke to the crowd that has been meeting every Sunday on the town square and on the Inn Bridge for a few weeks to demonstrate. A video recording of the general practitioner’s speech against the corona vaccination spread rapidly on social media and unsettled not only those people who know and appreciate the general practitioner, but also many others.
The Innviertler Nachrichten therefore asked Primary Bernd Lamprecht, Head of the Clinic for Lung Medicine and Pneumology at the Kepler University Clinic Linz, for a fact check on the statements made in the video.
Claim: There are side effects and after-effects of vaccinations, some of which do not appear until two to three months later, although a connection with the vaccination is negated. This has to do with the mode of action of the mRNA preparations, which can also trigger autoimmune reactions.
Fact: The numerous studies and extensive observational studies show no proof of triggering relapses of existing autoimmune diseases or the occurrence of new autoimmune diseases. In addition, confronting the immune system with a characteristic of the coronavirus is certainly no more risky in this regard than confronting the entire virus in the event of an infection.
Claim: The vaccination reactivates dormant pathogens in the body.
Fact: There is neither a plausible pathomechanism nor evidence that vaccination would reactivate dormant pathogens. The situation is different in the case of severe coronavirus disease, because pathogens previously kept in check can be reactivated as a result of a weakened physical condition.
Claim: Many colleagues have observed a new flare-up or an acceleration in the course of cancer, but also new carcinomas that are temporally related to a Covid vaccination.
Fact: I myself look after a large number of lung cancer patients and cannot confirm any unusual dynamics. Temporal relationships can be explained simply by vaccinating a large part of the population within a short period of time, but this does not mean that there is a causal relationship. The number of new cases of cancer has not changed in the past year.
Claim: As a recovered person, you are protected much more extensively than as a vaccinated person.
Fact: The immunity after infection / illness is undoubtedly good, but even this does not protect against further or renewed infection and illness after a few months. For this reason, vaccinations are also recommended for those who have recovered in order to ensure reliable protection. While vaccination protection can be obtained without the risk of severe coronavirus disease, the path to immunity via infection carries a significant health risk.
Claim: The positive benefit-risk calculation has so far only been proven for the elderly and chronically ill. For children, the side effects of the vaccination are more important than the success of the vaccination.
Fact: I think this question should be left to the child specialists, who, after careful consideration and weighing up the benefits and risks, decided on a clear vaccination recommendation. I refer to the National Vaccination Committee and the Austrian Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (ÖGKJ). (Editor’s note: The National Vaccination Committee states: “Compared to adults, children and adolescents are rarely seriously ill with Covid-19, but severe disease courses such as a multi-system inflammation syndrome are also in Austria with a frequency of 1: 1000 has been observed in children and adolescents with confirmed infection. In addition, children and adolescents can suffer from long-term consequences of Covid-19 even after mild or asymptomatic courses. “)
