Almost finished: The new Linz bridge needs a name

OÖN cult figure Vitus Mostdipf has put himself in position: readers are called upon to send name suggestions for the new Linz bridge.
This year, the bridge and the yellow-marked tunnel tubes – B127 on the left and B129 on the right – are to be opened to traffic.

It is not yet time to look back, says Franz Sempelmann as he drives his small car from the Eferdinger Bundesstrasse into the construction site area. Then he approaches the light at the end of the tunnel at walking pace. Once there, he crosses the Danube over the new rope bridge.

The loop from the Linz side (B129) to the Urfahr side (B127) and back again is symbolic: In the first, hot phase of the Westring project, an end is finally in sight. Construction of the bridge, including its tunnel entrances and exits, is due to be completed shortly. “The only thing missing is the lighting of the bridge,” says Sempelmann, who is responsible for the major Asfinag project. The total costs were recently estimated at 1.18 billion euros.
