Alexander Neubacher and his guests had a nice surprise on Saturday: It was the dead of winter around the Edelweiss mountain inn at an altitude of 1,600 meters. The Geosphere weather station registered 75 centimeters of fresh snow on the Feuerkogel. However, the wind caused one and a half meters to fall in places, says Neubacher. Both entrance doors to the mountain inn were so covered in snow that it was impossible to open them. “I spent three hours shoveling in the morning alone so that the guests could even get out,” says Neubacher, who has been running the family business for more than 25 years.
His father told him that it snowed once a month on the Feuerkogel. “That’s no longer the case in mid-summer, there are also snow-free months, but snowfall in mid-September is nothing unusual,” says Neubacher. The amount that has fallen now is unusual for him. “I can’t remember such a massive onset of winter,” he says.
