With the arrival of spring on September 21, “La Niña” will begin to take hold in South America, affecting the entire continent and, in particular, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina, the main producers of grains and seeds.

The spring-summer season in Argentina will be marked by the “La Niña” phenomenonassociated with the droughtaccording to a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office (NOAA).

With the arrival of spring on September 21, “La Niña” will begin to take hold in South America, affecting the entire continent and, in particular, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina, the main producers of grains and seeds.

The phenomenon is synonymous with low rainfall, unlike “El Niño”, a period in which rainfall is abundant. Both extremes are harmful to the population in general and the agricultural sector in particular.

There is also concern in tourist areas such as the province of Córdoba, among others, where fires have been reported.

According to the report, Summer will be dry and less hot than usual, generating greater droughts and frosts, the latter more in keeping with the winter season.

Meanwhile, the official website of the National Meteorological Service of Argentinaindicates that: “According to the dynamic and statistical models, on average, in the September-October quarter-November 2024 (SON), there is a 55% chance of neutral conditions and a 41% chance of La Niña developing.”

What is “La Niña”?

Unlike “El Niño”, “La Niña” is a climatic phenomenon that brings with it a period of low rainfall. During this period, temperatures cool down on the surface of the Pacific Ocean at the height of the Equator.

Although both phenomena alternate, not every year, they do occur more frequently, although their cycle ranges from two to seven years.

Fires and floods, depending on the phenomenon that occurs, are consequences of the same and can generate climatic changes throughout the world.
