Traffic light commission recommends “high alert” for critical infrastructure

Even the last three orange spots in Styria, Burgenland and Carinthia are colored red, so they are also in the very high risk area. The responsible commission recommends the system-critical infrastructure “high alert”.

The committee points out that it is assumed that people infected with omicrons are less likely to be hospitalized and that the wave currently only poses a low systemic risk. At the same time, however, it is emphasized that this can change quickly, as the dynamics in the USA show. The Corona Commission therefore recommends closely examining the incoming hospital plaque for virus variants in order to quickly gain insight into the virulence of omicrons in the Austrian context.

Salzburg with the highest risk number

The committee suggests the usual measures – including faster vaccination, FFP2 masks indoors and avoiding large gatherings. However, school operations should continue to be implemented as comprehensively as possible.

At least as far as the number of infections is concerned, Omikron has already made an impact in Austria, which can be seen from the risk number, which is decisive for the color of the traffic light. The highest risk area starts at risk number 100 and no federal state is at least close to that. It looks best in Burgenland with 214. In comparison, the 1,716 in Tyrol are dramatic. That is almost four times the number of risks there compared to the previous week. The value in Salzburg is almost 1,300.

Trend is up everywhere

The 14-day trend in infections is pointing up everywhere, not a single district was spared. The pandemic in Salzburg had the worst development with an increase of 155 percent. It looks comparatively cheapest in Vorarlberg with an increase of 83 percent. What is rather alarming is that the trend is even more pronounced among the over-65s. Here, the national average is almost 294 percent. Overall, however, this age group accounts for only seven percent of cases. The pandemic is currently spreading most strongly in the group of 12-29 year olds, in which 34 percent of all infections took place.

1.5 percent positive tests

The source of infection can still be clarified in 40 percent of cases. Less than every fourth disease discovered is asymptomatic (24 percent). For once, most tests were not carried out in Vienna, but in relation to the number of inhabitants in Vorarlberg. The positive rate rose sharply throughout Austria. If only 0.5 percent of all tests were positive in the last week of 2021, this value rose to 1.5 percent in the first calendar week of 2022.
