According to reporting data from the federal states, 73 percent of the corona evidence examined for variants was assigned to Omikron in the first calendar week of 2022. This emerges from the weekly report of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Thursday evening. According to this data source, Omikron is the predominant corona variant in Germany, writes the RKI.
A share of 51 percent is given as a comparison value for the week before. This data takes into account evidence from genetic analysis as well as suspected cases from so-called variant-specific PCR tests.
doubling within a week
Findings from another source, a random sample, are more meaningful but less up-to-date than the reported data: Only the results of complete genetic material analyzes of randomly selected samples are included here. According to the RKI report, the Omicron share in the last week of 2021 was around 40 percent. This corresponds to about a doubling compared to the week before.
Continued strong increase expected
Meanwhile, the delta variant, which caused the fourth wave, continues to lose ground. However, the RKI referred to large regional differences in the Omicron status: the proportion is between 11 percent in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 96 percent in Bremen. In general, a sharp increase in infections “with the omicron variant, which is also easier to transmit in vaccinated and recovered people,” is expected in the next few weeks.
