Threatening factory closure at Audi: Thousands demonstrated in Brussels

They demanded billions in investments in industry in the European Union. Brussels public transport workers also went on strike in solidarity.

“Our lives are not assembly lines,” read one of the factory workers’ posters. “In a few weeks we will be unemployed, without money and without prospects,” explained an Audi worker who wished to remain anonymous. “Starting a new apprenticeship at the age of 37 will be complicated,” he added.

Union leader calls for investments

“What is being done in Europe is the opposite of what should be done,” criticised the president of the Belgian trade union FGTB, Thierry Bodson. “They are talking about austerity, while what really needs to be invested in industry is billions and billions.”
