Omicron: Warning against trivialization

In view of the omicron wave, more than 30 scientists in the specialist magazine “British Medical Journal” are calling for Europe-wide action to curb the spread of the new variant. Recently, the impression has often arisen that this is a “mild” variant, the containment of which no longer makes sense. The IHS researcher Thomas Czypionka, who was involved in the call, warns of a “dangerous” fatalism in this context.

“According to our findings, this attitude is inappropriate,” says Czypionka: “Proven, evidence-based measures are still effective in reducing infections and thus not overloading critical infrastructure and health care.”

The lowest possible number of cases would protect the critical infrastructure, which threatens to come under pressure from a particularly large number of people in quarantine at the same time. The scientists also point out that hospital capacities for children are limited in all countries.

Like many other experts, the group points to the importance of booster vaccinations, for example in order to keep the proportion of severe illnesses among the numerous omicron infections low.
