The United States is increasing pressure on European countries to agree on sanctions against Russia as soon as possible in case tensions escalate over Ukraine. This was reported in Bloomberg on Thursday, January 13.
U.S. officials, speaking this week with representatives of European Union (EU) countries, expressed concern about the slowness of the process of agreeing on anti-Russian sanctions, agency sources said. The United States is worried that “European leaders are ill-prepared” for Russia’s supposedly possible cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns, writes Bloomberg.
In turn, US partners from the EU are concerned that economic sanctions against Russia could negatively affect Europe itself.
On January 13, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia is considering the US bill on new sanctions against Moscow as a continuation of Washington’s destructive line. She also noted that the EU is also taking an increasingly destructive and anti-Russian position instead of trying to seriously understand the causes of the ongoing civil war in Ukraine and striving to help resolve the conflict.
Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia would find alternatives in the event of new US sanctions. He added that in the West they underestimate the role of the Russian Federation in the modern world, as well as its potential.
