It was pitch black when 17-year-old Dominic K. from the municipality of Schlatt was out on his mountain bike at around 5:50 a.m. yesterday. According to the police, the apprentice may have been on his way to his place of work. At the same time, a 21-year-old Romanian citizen was driving a van on the B135 priority road in the direction of Oberndorf near Schwanenstadt. The accident finally happened at the Kollmann crossing – where the Gallspacher federal road and the Atzbacher state road meet.
The 17-year-old may have disregarded the priority rules with his unlit mountain bike and turned left at the intersection in the direction of Schwanenstadt. According to the police, the driver of the van did not see the young cyclist and it was impossible to avoid him. The young man was thrown against the windshield and then lay motionless on the bike path.
“On the part of the alarmed rescue workers, I can say that everything was really done at the scene of the accident to help the young man as quickly as possible,” says Gerald Schuster, District Rescue Commander of the Red Cross in Vöcklabruck. The 17-year-old was resuscitated at the scene of the accident and was taken to the Vöcklabruck Salzkammergut Clinic with serious injuries. At first, the doctors there fought for his life, around noon Dominic K. succumbed to his serious injuries.
A community mourns
In the municipality of Oberndorf near Schwanenstadt, there is deep dismay at the death of the 17-year-old. The family had only moved to the municipality of Schlatt a few months ago. “It’s always tragic when a young person’s life is taken so suddenly. My sincere condolences go to his family,” says Mayor Christian Mader.
